Elf Owls are between 5 and 6 inches. They are as long as your cerealspoon.

One of the most interesting things we learned was how adaptable the Elf Owl is. It normally resides in the cactus mentioned by one of the students, or in mesquite trees. However, it has also nested in telephone poles, fence poles yucca stalks, and dead tree limbs. In fact, in some areas, their numbers are decreasing because people are putting the utilities underground!
