Dispite the seemingly hopeless situations people found themselves in, there were those who resisted the Nazis. Eastern European guerrilla fighters called partisans participated in sabotage and even assassination against the Nazis. French president Charles du Gaul ordered the sabotage and distruction of German forts, railways, and buildings. In the Jewish ghettos, forces of rebels planned uprisings in order to avenge deaths and to defend Jewish pride. Rebels were often shot. In concentration camps, rebels, with the help of partisans, stole weaponry and attacked SS officers. One case involved four Jewish crematorium workers blew up a crematory, unfortunatly all four rebels were killed. Very few rebels survived after their uprisings.
